I Fojaroi

I Fojaroi

The Fojaroi are structures built at high altitudes to be used as permanent dwellings during the summer period.

They served as shelters for shepherds, for animals, and for cheese production in the warmer months, while in winter they were used as storage facilities and barns to meet the survival needs of low-altitude settlements.

The most characteristic and extraordinary part of these constructions, however, is the roof, covered with beech twigs topped with leaves (“foje” from which fojarol derives), which were cut in August during the waning moon, when the beech is at the peak of its vegetative phase, and immediately put into place.

Today, only a few examples can still be observed, some of which are open to visitors in Valle di Seren on the northern side of the Grappa Massif.
