In the collective imagination, the “Sponcio” corn represents the typical corn and therefore the typical polenta of Veneto’s mountains, with all the references that can be drawn from the uniqueness of the Dolomites’ environment.
The old varieties of corn, moved back from the valley bottom to the foothills areas of Feltre and Belluno, are here surrounded by an environment of high naturalness, an unique niche for the preservation of his biodiversity.
The name of this ancient variety comes from the pointed shape of the corn, indeed the term “Sponcio” in dialect means “that stings”. Milled in ancient water mills, the result is a semi-wheatmeat flour. The production is protected by the Consortium for the preservation of the Sponcio Corn which is associated with all Belluno’s farmers of the Cooperativa Agricola la Fiorita.
This Cooperativa follows an environmentally friendly discipline which takes care of theancient traditions.
