The local barley, revived recently by a growing group of associated farmers,it is cultivated either using an authentic old local variety or in modern varieties, it is grown with eco-friendly systems and during the summer the harvesting is combined with characteristic folkloristic events. It is one of the most virtuous agricultural products, so that you can appreciate it in many different ways: decorticated with traditional systems to taste the traditional local soups, ground to achieve full original flour for bread and dough, homemade toasted to savour the traditional “barley coffee” as well as malted for the production of “Dolomites”beer , from a well-known brewery near Feltre (Pedavena brewery).
Serving suggestions:
One of the most typical dishes of Bellunos’ culinary tradition is just the hulled barley soup, without forgetting moderns “orzotti”, fresh salads with seasonal vegetables or the characteristic beverage.
Certifications:
The “Orzo Bellunese”, in its ancient variety, was decleared “Slow Food Presidio”, just to ensure the preservation and multiplication of the original seed, the knowledge related to its cultivation and processing in local mills. It can constitute a real alternative to the intensive non-traditional farming and the abandonment of mountain areas. It also has the “Tipical Agricultural Food” Certification. (P.A.T.)
