Dolomiti Bellunesi Honey PDO is one of the most authentic products of the Belluno Alpine region. Its quality comes from a unique environment, where meadows, pastures and forests create ideal conditions for beekeeping.
Honey production in this area is documented since ancient times. The earliest records date back to the 16th century. In 1712, historical sources already mention three types of honey: high Alpine flower honey, heather honey, and mixed forest honey. This long tradition reflects a deep connection between nature and human activity.
Thanks to a rich floral diversity and different altitudes, Dolomiti Bellunesi honey offers a wide range of flavours and aromas. Among the most common varieties are the spring wildflower honeys from the valley floors, light and delicate, with notes of fruit trees, wild raspberry and dandelion. There are also the summer mountain wildflower honeys, darker and more aromatic, featuring thyme, white clover and rhododendron. In addition, the area produces single-flower honeys such as acacia, chestnut, dandelion and lime, as well as prized honeydews.
Since 1980, the Apidolomiti label has helped promote this honey beyond the local area. In 2010, it received the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status. Together with Lunigiana honey, it is the only Italian honey to hold a European quality certification. It had already been recognised as a Traditional Agri-Food Product (P.A.T.).
Dolomiti Bellunesi honey is a pure and versatile product. It can be enjoyed on its own or used in sweet and savoury recipes, enhancing flavours with natural balance.
A key event is the Honey Festival of Limana, held every year in mid-October. During the festival, the best honeys of the province of Belluno are awarded, celebrating local beekeepers and biodiversity. It is a perfect opportunity to experience the sweet side of the Dolomites.
