Spiriti, Dèmoni e Maschere fra le Dolomiti e la Sardegna
A conference on pagan ritual masks by anthropologist Dr. Cesare Poppi.
In the inner courtyard of Palazzo Crepadona, anthropologist Dr. Cesare Poppi will lead guests on a journey through the pagan ritual masks that for millennia have heralded and propitiated the arrival of spring in both the Dolomite valleys and the Sardinian hinterland.
Cesare Poppi was born in 1953 in Bologna. He graduated in Philosophy with Bernardo Bernardi and then earned a Master’s and PhD in Social Anthropology from Cambridge (UK) with Sir Jack Goody.
He has conducted research among the Ladin people of Fassa since 1974 and on the secret mask societies in northern Ghana since 1984.
From 1988 to 2003, he was Deputy Director of the Sainsbury Research Unit for the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas in Norwich, UK. He has taught at the Universities of East Anglia (Norwich, UK), Malta, Bologna, and Trento.
He has been a Visiting Professor at the Universities of Seattle and Austin (USA) and Buea (Cameroon).
He has taught courses in anthropology at the SUPSI University of Lugano, the UNISG University of Pollenzo (Turin), Bozen/Bolzano, and Udine.
He has collaborated on the production of ethnographic documentaries for RAI 3 and SKY. He was a Scientific Advisor for the EU Research Program ‘Carnival King of Europe’. Full CV and bibliography at www.academia.edu.
