Il Tobiolo e l’Angelo Raffaele di Tiziano alla Madonna dell’Orto

The presentation, preceded by a guided tour of the Fulcis Museum conducted by the Director Carlo Cavalli, will illustrate the conservation path of the work Tobit and the Angel Raphael by Titian at the Madonna dell’Orto in Venice, highlighting the main challenges faced and the results achieved following the restoration.

Painted around 1540 for the altar of the Angel Raphael in the Venetian church of San Marziale, the altarpiece by Titian Tobit and the Angel Raphael is now housed in the church of Madonna dell’Orto.

In the summer of 2023, the work underwent a diagnostic campaign and a maintenance intervention aimed at making its exhibition possible at the exhibition Titian 1508.

At the beginning of a bright career, at the Gallerie dell’Accademia (September 9 – December 3).

It was subsequently subjected to a careful restoration conducted by Enrica Colombini and funded by Save Venice thanks to the contribution of Donna Malin, to finally be relocated to its current location at Madonna dell’Orto.

Gabriele Matino is a senior researcher at Save Venice, specialized in art history and curator of exhibitions and publications on artists such as Tintoretto, Carpaccio, and Titian.

He also collaborates with international experts on restoration projects and artistic studies.

Melissa Conn is the director of the Venice office of Save Venice, with over 30 years of experience in the restoration and preservation of Venetian art.

She is heavily involved in conservation projects and gives lectures both in Italy and in the United States.

Enrica Colombini is an expert restorer, teacher, and head of a restoration company, having worked on works by artists such as Titian, Giulia Lama, and others, focusing on paintings and sculptures of great value.

Elena Galante is a restorer specialized in mural paintings, canvas and wooden artifacts, collaborating with important museums and institutions such as Ca’ Rezzonico, Museo Correr, and Save Venice, and has worked on works by artists such as Tiepolo and Giulia Lama.

All these figures are committed to the protection and enhancement of Venetian and international artistic heritage.

Particular attention will be given to the diagnostic investigations, with a focus on the changes found in the underlying drawing beneath the paint layer and their implications for the historical-artistic interpretation of the painting, its iconography, and its devotional functions.
