On Thursday, April 3, the show by Giovanni Scifoni – FRA’ – Saint Francis, the Superstar of the Middle Ages, will take place at the Teatro Comunale Dino Buzzati.

How can one talk about Saint Francis of Assisi without being monstrously banal? How will I stage this show without it sounding like a Jovanotti song?
If I ask an anticlerical atheist “name a saint you like,” he will say: Francis.
Why does everyone know Saint Francis? Why have tens of thousands of texts been written about him? Why is he so irresistible? And why him in particular? He was not the only one practicing poverty. At that time, there were plenty of saints and heretical movements that made the same extreme choice; what was so special about this little bourgeois, half-hippie slum guy who leaves everything to become a beggar?
What was special was that he was an artist. Perhaps the greatest in history. His sermons were mad and visionary masterpieces. They were performances of contemporary theater.
He played with elements of nature, improvised in French, quoting from memory passages from the chanson de geste, distorting their meaning, using his body, nudity, even his own illness, physical pain, and mutism.
