Giornata della tosatura

20 July @ 0:00

How are sheep sheared?
The Malga Illari would like to welcome you in Cate, Chies d’Alpago to answer your curiosities and questions: come and discover the ancient tradition of sheep shearing in an authentic atmosphere surrounded by nature. Live music with western themes from 3:00 PM. Typical products, animals, nature, and music… a perfect day for the whole family.

The Alpago is a harsh but beautiful land that, skimming the mountains, gently glides into a valley to mirror itself in the calm waters of its lake. The basin has always been an ideal place for herding, the main activity in the municipalities of Alpago, Chies, and Tambre until the second post-war period.
And Alpago has given its name to a native sheep breed of medium-small size, with a curious dark pattern on its head and the lower part of its limbs, covered entirely by a thick, fine, and wavy fleece, from the knee and hock to the frontal region. Without horns, with short ears and a slightly rounded profile, it is a rustic breed, suited to alpine environments, but equally appropriate for stable breeding.

Day at the mountain hut discovering the wool of Alpago.
