Where the Giro d’Italia makes history

The Giro first arrived in the Dolomites in 1937, sparking a legendary love affair that has captivated pro riders and amateurs alike ever since. While famous passes like Giau and Pordoi are just a stone’s throw away, the climbs around Belluno and Feltre have written some of cycling’s most epic chapters.

Take the Nevegàl: first introduced in 1962, it became the stage for a legendary showdown in 2011. Alberto Contador, “El Pistolero,” delivered a performance for the ages, beating the favorite Vincenzo Nibali in a mountain time trial that left the crowds roaring.

And then there is the Croce d’Aune Pass. It was here, on November 4th, 1924, that a young Tullio Campagnolo saw victory slip away because his frozen hands couldn’t loosen his wheel. That moment of frustration led to the invention of the quick-release skewer and the modern derailleur. Cycling changed forever right here, on these slopes. For those seeking a spiritual challenge, the various ascents of Monte Grappa offer pure riding pleasure while honoring the fallen of the Great War—a tribute the Giro famously paid during its 100th edition in 2017.
