THE WONDERS OF THE AUTUMN SKY (Sandra De Bacco – Rheticus)

With the arrival of autumn, the night sky transforms and offers stargazers a rich spectacle of suggestions. The nights progressively become longer and become the ideal opportunity to look up and be fascinated by the wonders of the Universe.

Among the main features of the autumn sky are the constellations of Pegasus, Andromeda, and Cassiopeia, easily recognizable and rich in interesting celestial objects. In the constellation of Andromeda, even with a simple pair of binoculars and under sufficiently dark skies, it is possible to search for the famous Andromeda Galaxy (M31), a gigantic spiral galaxy located about 2.5 million light years from Earth.

Autumn is also a particularly interesting time to observe the planets, the Moon, and the astronomical events that mark the passage of the seasons. Evenings dedicated to observation can thus become an occasion to better understand the sky and comprehend the phenomena that lie behind those little bright points we see shining above us.

Observing the sky means not only recognizing stars and constellations: it also means rediscovering the dimensions of time and space. The light that reaches our eyes has often traveled for years, centuries, or even millions of years before arriving at us.

The night of the Moon will allow us, through the various tools of the Center, to observe in detail the most beautiful objects of deep space, galaxies, nebulae, double, triple, and colored stars, and also, with the aid of lasers, to identify the constellations of the autumn sky and discover through them, ancient myths and fascinating stories.

SEAS AND CRATERS OF THE CRESCENT MOON (Rheticus Staff)

The evening will represent this month’s best moment to observe the Moon with the various telescopes of the Astronomical Center. Unlike the full Moon, where direct sunlight flattens details, the angular light near the First Quarter casts long, sharp shadows along the demarcation line between day and night on the Moon (the terminator), highlighting craters, mountains, and valleys in three-dimensional relief. The oblique incidence of sunlight creates elongated shadows and very high contrast, showcasing the spectacularity of the lunar landscape:

The Main Craters: Unique details will be clearly visible within impact features such as Theophilus, Cyrillus, and Catharina, as well as the large central crater complexes.

The Lunar Seas: Wide visibility over the Mare Serenitatis and the Mare Tranquillitatis, dark basaltic basins formed by ancient lava flows.

The Mountain Ranges: Full view of the Montes Apenninus, one of the most imposing mountain ranges of the Moon, whose peaks cast long shadows over the plains below.

In case of overcast skies or rain, the evening will take place entirely inside the planetarium where we will discuss in detail the characteristics of our satellite, also with the aid of spectacular images and videos.
